Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The chronic toxicity of MBT to aquatic invertebrates (Dapnia magna) was tested according to OECD TG 211 "Daphnia magna Reproduction test". After 21 days of exposure, an EC50 of 0.33 mg/L and a NOEC of 0.08 mg/L were obtained (MITI, 1999).
No experimental data available regarding the chronic toxicity of the described metabolites of MBT to aquatic invertebrates, such as BT, BTon, MBTS and MeSBT. According to the acute toxicity of them to aquatic invertebrates, they are expected to be less toxic than MBT.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

SMBT is an organic salt of strong base NaOH and weak acid of MBT and it is solely marketed as aqueous solution. The presence of MBT determines the hazard profile of SMBT aqueous solution; and hence the read-across approach is used to support the risk assessment of SMBT. No valid data with SMBT as test substance are available for the chronic invertebrates toxicity.
