Description of key information

LC50 of 2,550 mg/kg Perchlorate dw has been determined for earthworms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Short-term EC50 or LC50 for soil macroorganisms:
2 550 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

Perchlorate acute and long-term effects were assessed in the frame of one study convering several endpoint determinations (Landrum et al. 2006). This study identified as a key study was carried out according to OECD guidelines (207 and 222). Overall, acute tests conducted in sand with Perchlorate showed better dose-response relationships than the filter paper contact tests and utilized the maximum number of replicates the authors tested. Therefore, the LC50 and EC50 estimates from these experiments may be more accurate than those estimated from filter paper tests. The effects on the reproductive success of earthworm seem difficult to interpret related to the very low production of cocoons observed in control conditions and to the dose-response relationship not obtained from these results.

As a conclusion, 14d-LC50 of 2,550 mg/L can be considered as the relevant result from this study. Therefore, Perchlorate can be considered as practically nontoxic to earthworms.
