The target substance, 3-morpholinopropane-1-sulphonic acid (MOPS, CAS 1132-61-2), is a mono-constituent substance. It represents a small molecule consisting of a morpholine-substituted propanesulphonic acid moiety.
MOPS as well as the source MES are both frequently used as a zwitterionic buffering agent in biology and biochemistry.
The source substance, 2-morpholinoethane-1-sulphonic acid (MES, CAS 4432-31-9) is a mono-constituent substance which shares exactly the same functional groups as the target substance. It represents a small molecule consisting of a morpholine-substituted ethanesulphonic acid moiety.
The target (MOPS) and the source compound (MES) consist of very similar chemical structures sharing the same functional groups. Both substances differ only in the length of the C-chain of the sulphonic acid moiety, i.e. MOPS (target) consists of a propyl chain, while MES contains an ethyl chain. The similar chemical structure of target and source are reflected in similar physico-chemical properties, such as high water solubility and comparable logPOW values. Therefore a read-across from MES to MOPS is considered as adequate to fulfill the information requirements of the hydrolysis study.
