Only animals with intact skin were used. Control animals were not required, as untreated skin areas of the test animal can serve as control. After the 4-hour exposure period residual test substance was cautiously removed from the exposed skin. The treated skin patches were evaluated at: 0.5-1 hour post end of exposure and at 24, 48 and 72 h post end of exposure.

Conclusions:
The mean Draize scores for erythema and edema derived from 24, 48 and 72 hour post treatment observation time points in 3 rabbits were 0.0 each. The only erythema finding (very slight in degree) seen in this study in one animal at 0.5 to 1 hour post patch removal was completely reversible within 24 hours post patch removal. Based on these finding the test substance is neither skin irritating nor skin corrosing.
Executive summary:

2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone was tested for skin irritation according to OECD Guideline 404 and in compliance with GLP. Reliability grade 1 was assigned to the study. Each of three New Zealand White rabbits was treated for 4 hours by semi-occlusive administration of a single dose of 0.5 g test substance moistened with polyethylene glycol 400 to shaved intact skin (approximately 6 cm2/animal). The site of administration was examined for skin reactions at 0.5-1, 24, 48 and 72 hours post patch removal. The only finding during this study was an erythema very slight in degree (Grade 1, barely perceptible) in one animal at 0.5 -1 hour post patch removal. This finding was completely reversible within 24 hours post patch removal. No edema reaction was evident during the entire study. Mean Draize scores for erythema and edema derived from the latter three observation time points were 0.0 each. Based on these finding the test substance is neither skin irritating nor skin corrosing.
