Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Due to the positive result in a wire netting cube of 100 mm edge length at 140 °C and a negative
result in a wire netting cube of 25 mm edge length at 140 °C and a negative result in a wire netting
cube of 100 mm edge length at 120 °C the test item has to be classified as “self-heating substance”
according division 4.2, packing group (PG) III if transported in packages with a volume >3 m³.
The test item also has to be classified as “self-heating substance” according to chapter 2.111,
category 2 of the GHS (CLP) regulations if packaged in volumes >3 m³.
Executive summary:

The test item was tested for autoflammability according to UN N.4 in 100 mm sample cube at 140°C, a 25 mm sample cube at 140 °C and a 100 mm sample cube at 120°C.

For the test in the 100 mm sample cube at an oven temperature of 140 °C an amount of 688.6 g of

the test item was filled into the sample container. Approximately 9 hours after the filled sample cube

was put into the hot oven the test item reached the storage temperature and continued to rise as a

consequence of an exothermic effect up to a maximum temperature of 201 °C (after approximately

12.5 hours). Due to the spontaneous steep temperature rise and due to a temperature rise of more

than 60 K self-ignition was determined and the test resulted positive.

For the test in the 2.5 cm cube sample at an oven temperature of 140 °C an amount of 8.5 g of the

test item was filled into the sample container. No self-heating was determined during the test

(approximately 37 hours) and the test resulted negative.

For the test in the 100 mm sample cube at an oven temperature of 120 °C an amount of 658.2 g of

the test item was filled into the sample container. Approximately 22 hours after the filled sample

cube was put into the hot oven the test item reached the storage temperature and continued to rise

as a consequence of a weak exothermic effect. After approximately 40 hours the test was

terminated. A maximum sample temperature of 122 °C (end of this test) was determined. Due to the

fact that no spontaneous steep temperature rise and no temperature rise of 60 K or more was

determined the test resulted negative.
