Description of key information

Based on a reliable OECD Guideline study, the following endpoints for the growth of P. subcapitata exposed to NPEO were derived: 72 h EC50 for growth rate (ErC50) > 3.0 mg/L (nominal); 72 h NOEC (growth rate) 1.5 mg/L (nominal); 72 h EC50 for yield (EyC50) 2.02 mg/L (nominal) and 72 h NOEC (yield) 0.75 mg/L (nominal). Growth rate data is considered for risk assessment purposes.

Additional information

The toxicity of NPEO to the unicellular freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined according to OECD Guideline 201. The aim of the study was to assess the effects on growth rate and yield over a period of 72 h. The study was conducted under static conditions with an initial cell density of 5 x 103cells/mL. Six concentrations were tested in a geometrical series with a dilution factor of 2: 0, 0.0938, 0.188, 0.375, 0.75, 1.50 and 3.0 mg/L. Three replicates were run for the test substance concentrations and six replicates for the control. Environmental conditions were determined to be within the acceptable limits. Doses were verified analytically at test start and end. Measured concentrations at study start and end were in the range of 94 - 98% and 80 – 95% of nominal values, respectively. All effect values were therefore given based on nominal concentrations.The following endpoints for the growth of P. subcapitatawere derived: EC50 for growth rate (ErC50) > 3.0 mg/L (nominal), NOEC (growth rate) 1.5 mg/L (nominal), EC50 for yield (EyC50) 2.02 mg/L (nominal) and NOEC (yield) 0.75 mg/L (nominal) (Scheerbaum D, 2010).
