Experimental results have been determined for Bayferrox 303 T (Manganese ferrite) which has a very similar composition as Bayferrox 645T (iron manganese oxide). According to the product information leaflet, the compositions of the Bayferrox types in discussion are:
Compound Bayferrox 303 T Bayferrox 645 T
Fe2O3 73 % 85 %
SiO2 + Al2O3 < 5 % < 4 %
MnO < 22 % < 10 %
The SiO2 and Al2O3 are very stable compounds they will not react even at high temperatures neither with flammable material nor with air and should be considered inert with respect to the physical properties relevant for classification. - Reason / purpose for cross-reference:

Description of key information
a) Flammability: In iron manganese trioxide, the iron is already in its maximum oxidation stage of +III. Further oxidation is not possible. The Mn ion is in the oxidation stage of +II. Due to its chemical composition, iron manganese trioxide is expected to be less reactive towards oxygen than manganese ferrite (CAS 68186-94-7) which has been found to give a negative result in UN test N.1.
Iron manganese trioxide is classified as not readily combustible solid according to UN Test Procedure N.1 (33.2.1.4.1).
b) Pyrophoric properties: The study on pyrophoric properties does not need to be conducted due to experience in production and handling, the substance is known to be stable at room temperature.
c) Flammability on contact with water: In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, a study does not need to be conducted as the substance is an inert oxide which does not react with water. Flammable gases are not formed in contact with water.
d) Organic peroxide: In accordance with part 2, section 2.15 of Annex I of the CLP Regulation 1272/2008, the substance does not need to be assessed for organic peroxide properties, as based on its chemical structure, iron manganese trioxide is not an organic peroxide.
e) Self-reacting properties: In accordance with Annex I, part 2, section 2.8 of the CLP regulation 1272/2008, a study does not need to be conducted, as there are no chemical groups present in the molecule associated with explosive or self-reactive properties; examples of such groups are given in Tables A6.1 and A6.2 in Appendix 6 of the UN RTDG, Manual of Tests and Criteria.
f) Self-heating properties: A study on self-heating behaviour of the substance does not need to be conducted. In this compound, the Iron ion is already in its maximum oxidation stage of +III. Further oxidation is not possible. Therefore, this substance will not react with oxygen or air, and self-heating of the substance up to 400 °C is excluded.

Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
Iron manganese trioxide is not flammable, it has no pyrophoric properties, no flammability in contact with water, is not a self-heating and a self-reactive substance, is not an organic peroxide; and hence no classification according to both Directive 67/548/EEC and GHS (Regulation EC 1272/2008) is required.
