Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Neuhaus et al., 1985

The investigation on effects of chlorobenzene in the contact test with earthworm (Eisenia foetida) was performed according to the contact filter paper test, developed by the the EEC to evaluate chemical toxicity (Edwards, 1983). A LC50 value of 29µg/cm2 after 48h was measured. This test is comparable to the initial sreening test of OECD Guideline 207.

No test is available with terrestrial arthropods, however, a test on acute toxicity to earthworms (annelid) is available which is the species recommended by the OECD test guideline 207 for soil-dwelling organisms.

Hulzebos, E.M. et al., 1993

EC50 values for growth of lettuce (Latuca sativa) exposed to chlorobenzene were determined to be 1000 mg/kg soil in a 7-day test and >1000mg/kg soil in a 14 -day test. This test was carried out according to OECD testguideline 208. In addition a nutrient solution test was performed and EC50 value of 9.3mg/L was measured.

No valid test is available for toxicitiy to soil microorganisms. In the first instance, before new terrestrial effects testing is conducted, a PNECsoil may be calculated from the PNECwater using Equilibrium Partitioning.

The toxicity of chlorobenzene to birds had not been tested. Toxicity to bird's eggs is available, but not valid. However, chlorobenzene is not intended to be applied outdoor, therefore a risk toward birds from exposure to chlorobenzene is thus not to be expected.
