Description of key information

Chlorobenzene is not readily biodegradable but a primary degradation (>20%) has been observed in closed bottle tests (OECD 301D). Tests under aerobic conditions in water with adapted microorganisms and in aerated soil layers show a potential for biodegradation. Non adapted microorganisms degrade the substance more slowly. Simulation tests showed a potential for biodegradation of chlorobenzene under aerobic conditions. Chlorobenzene is not degraded either in digested sludge or in sediment under aerobic conditions.
