Description of key information

D-Glucono-1,5-lactone was reported to have a 3-hour EC50 of 649.8 mg/L in activated sludge.
D-Glucono-1,5-lactone was reported to have a 16-hour EC50 greater than 500 mg/L in Pseudomonas putida.
Pseudomonas putida: EC50 (16 hr) > 500 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
649.8 mg/L

Additional information

Bellemain (2010) conducted an inhibition of oxygen consumption by activated sludge using glucono delta lactone (GDL). The study was conducted according to GLP and it followed OECD 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test) with no deviations. The 3-hour EC50 for GDL was reported to be 649.8 mg/L, based on the respiration rate. This study was rated "1" (reliable without restriction) according to Klimisch standards.

Rübelt (1992) conducted an acute toxicity study in Pseudomonas putida using D-glucono-1,5-lactone. The study was not conducted according to GLP; however, it followed DIN 38412, part 8 (Pseudomonas Zellvermehrungshemm test) with exceptions. The 16-hour EC50 for D-glucono-1,5-lactone was reported to be greater than 500 mg/L, based on bacterial growth stimulation at concentrations below 500 mg/L. Based on the deviations from OECD protocols and the lack of compliance with GLP, this study was rated ‘3’ (unreliable) according to Klimisch standards.
