Two semi-static studies, investigating the short-term toxicity to fish of Fatty acids, C16-18 even numbered and C18-unsatd. triesters with propylidynetrimethanol (CAS 57675-44-2), are available. Both studies were conducted according to OECD 203. In the key study (Kuttler, 1997) with Brachydanio rerio no mortality was observed at the tested concentration of 10000 mg/L. The LC 50 was determined as > 10000 mg/L (nominal) with highly turbidity at this concentration. In the supporting study (Källqvist and Tobiesen, Oleon, 1995a) with Salmo trutta the LC50 was > 1000 mg/L (nominal). In this study a small amount of "emulsion" was observed at the two highest concentrations (320 and 1000 mg/L) and also some increase in turbidity was noted. Therefore the highest tested concentrations in both studies demonstrated a worst case. In addition, another study (Källqvist and Tobiesen, 1995b) for Fatty acids, C16-18 even numbered and C18-unsatd. triesters with propylidynetrimethanol (CAS 57675-44-2) with Salmo trutta according to OECD 203 observed no effect of the test substance at the tested concentrations (100, 320, 1000 mg/L nominal) after 96 h exposure (LC50 > 1000 mg/L, nominal). Overall, based on these results it can be concluded that no toxicological effects to fish are expected for the test substance. Therefore, the test substance is not harmful to fish.

This is supported by structurally similar category members, in particular two guideline studies on the acute toxicity of Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 68002-78-8) to fish are available (Bouillon, 2012, Grell, 2012). Both studies were conducted in compliance with OECD Guideline 203. Zebra fish (Danio rerio) were exposed to the substance for 96 hours in a static test system. At the end of the exposure period LL50 values >102 mg/L and >110 mg/L were determined. The test results are based on the nominal concentration of the water accommodated fraction (WAF) of the test substance. Based on the results of the acute toxicity test toxic effects on fish are not expected up to the water solubility limit of the substance (< 0.05 mg/L; Frischmann 2012). As it can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in section 13 and the overall endpoint summary, IUCLID 6.1, all reliable data in the category support the hazard assessment of each category member by showing a consistent pattern of results within the polyol esters category, i.e. no toxic effects to aquatic organisms were observed up to the limit of water solubility.
