Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The EC50 (growth rate for diallyldimethylammonium chloride has been established at >100 mg/L based on 3 GLP studies on 2 different strains of unicellular green algae. The ErC10 for freshwater algae in a long-term study (96 hours) was 57 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
57 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of diallyldimethylammonium chloride to unicellular green algae has been tested recently in 3 GLP studies on 2 recommended test species: Desmodesmus subspicatus (2 studies) and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (1 study).

In only one of these studies (Vreyenhof, 2009) was the EC50 for growth rate at 72 hours under 100 mg/L (91 mg/L). This value, however, was less than 10% below 100 mg/L and its upper 95% confidence limit was 100 mg/L. At 96 hours the value was 120 mg/L showing decreasing toxicity with time and supporting the upper 95% CL value.

Taking the above into account along with the LC50/fish of 420 mg/L, the EC50/daphnia of >100 mg/L and the EC0/bacteria of >1000 mg/L, the EC50 growth rate of diallyldimethylammonium chloride for unicellular green algae has been established at >100 mg/L.

At 96 hours the ErC10 for the freshwater algae Desmodesmus subspicatus was 57 mg/L.
