Classification of Phenethyl benzoate effects in thClassification of N, N, N-triethylethanaminium bromide for effects in the environment:
The chemical N, N, N-triethylethanaminium bromide (CAS no. 71-91-0) is used as a phase transfer catalyst. It also acts as a source of tetraethylammonium ions in pharmacological and physiological studies, but it is also used in organic chemical synthesis. Also used as a ganglion blocking agent. The aim was to assess whether the PBT criterion within Annex XIII was fulfilled forN, N, N-triethylethanaminium bromide. The PBT criterion was herein assessed based on experimental data in conjunction with standardized environmental fate models. Here follows a description of the PBT assessment.
Persistence Assessment:
The Closed Bottle test (Biotic degradation), was performed to comprehend the percentage biodegradation of N, N, N-triethylethanaminium bromide (CAS no. 71-91-0) for the period of 28 days. All the experimental conditions were maintained in accordance with OECD 301D guidelines. The outcomes of the experiment states that the exposed chemical has undergone degradation of 22.4% after 28 days. Additionally, reference standard (sodium benzoate) was also run simultaneously, where it has shown 63.85 % biodegradation. Based on the percent biodegradation after 28 days the exposed test chemical can be considered as a Primary inherently biodegradable in nature. Thus, based on the annex XIII classification criteria PBT, the test chemical can be considered as Primary inherently biodegradable, and can be identified as not persistence in nature.
In Estimation Programs Interface suite (EPI suite, 2018), Fugacity model states that the half-life of the test chemical, N, N, N-triethylethanaminium bromide is 37.5, 337.5 and 75 days in water, sediment and soil compartements.
Bioaccumulation assessment
The data on accumulation of the test chemical in the aquatic species (BCF) is obtained from authoritative database, and the range was determined to be 3.162 to 14 L/Kg. If this chemical is released intentionally or unintentionally into the aquatic environment, there will be a low risk for the chemical to bioaccumulate in fish and their food webs.
Toxicity assessment
Aquatic organisms
Based on available data on the aquatic species, for the test chemical N, N, N-triethylethanaminium bromide. The Acute ecotoxicity values range from 65.6 to 357 mg/L. The values of toxicity conclude that the test chemical is toxic to aquatic organisms at environmentally relevant concentrations and can be classified into aquatic chronic 3 category. Due to the unavailability of the long-term data for aquatic organisms, by assumptions based on the other available data on aquatic endpoints, it is expected that test chemical NOEC will not be below 0.01 mg/L. Thus, chemical cannot be considered as toxic to aquatic species as per annex XIII.
Mammalian toxicity
The summaries of all the reports to mammalian toxicity suggests that the test chemical is neither a CMR nor the STOT chemical.
Conclusion:
On critical analysis of all the endpoints, the test chemical does not meet the criteria of PBT and it cannot be classified as the PBT chemical.
