Results and discussion

Results:
Uniform corrosion
-The weight loss of the aluminum and steel plates was < 13.5% (i.e. equivalent to < 6.25 mm/year corrosion rate); according to the guidelines, the test for uniform corrosion was negative.
-Although minimal weight losses of the metals was obtained it was visually observed that the metal plates reacted due to contact with the test item. With the aluminium plates a dark grey residue on the plates was observed. With the steel plates a brown residue was observed on the plates and on the bottom of the glass receptacles.

Localized corrosion
-The mean depth of the deepest hole of the aluminium plate was > 120 µm. According to the guidelines, the test for localized corrosion on aluminium was positive.
-Localized corrosion was observed on one aluminium and one steel plate (specimen 2). The depth of the deepest hole obtained with specimen 2 was measured in ten-fold using a Surface Profile Gauge (PCWI International, Cardiff, Australia).

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Because localized corrosion was observed with the aluminium plate placed in the half in/half above the test solution with the depth of the deepest hole was ≥ 120 µm, the test substance is considered to be corrosive to aluminium to the criterion for localized corrosion.

Executive summary:

The corrosion to metals was determined at 55°C and a 7-day test period using 2 mm aluminium and steel plates in a GLP-compliant study performed in accordance with UN-MTC Section 37.4 (Test C.1). The solid test substance was dissolved in water; the test concentration was 1 g/L.

-All weight losses were < 13.5% (i.e. equivalent to 6.25 mm/year corrosion rate).

-Localized corrosion was observed with the aluminium plate placed in the half in/half above the test solution. The depth of the deepest hole was ≥ 120 µm.

The test substance is considered to be corrosive to aluminium to the criterion for localized corrosion. Based on this, the substance was CLP classified as 'corrosive to metals'.
