Description of key information

Appearance:

In an experiment conducted by SSS(Europe)AB,based on On basis of visual perceptual the chemical 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol was dark red colored powder in appearance.

Melting point:

The melting point determination of 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No. 85-83-6) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean Melting Point was determined to be 183.5°C at 976.9hPa

Boiling point:

The boiling point determination of 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No. 85-83-6) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff.The chemical 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol melts at 183.5 °C,since it is dark in colour, String of bubbles cannot be observed.only rise in capillary at 238°C was observed. The test was conducted in replicates and mean boiling point was inferred to be greater than 238°C at 978.3 hPa.

Density:

The density of 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No. 85-83-6)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the method Adapted from ASTM D854-02 using glass pyknometer .The mean density of the test item was determined to be 1.331 g/cm³at 20°C and 977.5 hPa

Particle Size Distribution:

The particle size distribution of test test item 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No. 85-83-6 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 10 micron.

Vapor Pressure:

Data from various modelling databases suggests that the estimated vapor pressure of Solvent Red 24 at 25 deg C was 4.57E-012 mm Hg = 6.1E-010 Pa

Partition Coefficient:

Based on the available data from modelling database,the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance 1-(2-Methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol was estimated to be 6.66 ± 0.43. On the basis of this value, test chemical 1-(2-Methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol can be considered to be hydrophobic in nature.

Water Solubility:

The water solubility determination of test item 1 -(2 -methyl-4 -(2 -methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2 -naphthol (CAS No. 85 -83 -6) was done as per the OECD guideline 105 by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of (1 -(2 -methyl-4 -(2 -methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2 -naphthol of 85 -83 -6 ) in water was determine to be 0.023 mg/L at 25°C.

Thus it is concluded that test chemical is insoluble in water.

Solubility in organic solvents:

A study was conducted to determine the solubility of Solvent Red 24 in various organic solvents like benzene, acetone, ethanol..etc.

Solvent Red 24 was determined to be soluble in benzene, methanol, acetone, isopropanol and slightly soluble in ethanol.

Surface tension:

The study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the material. In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. The Scarlet red (85-83-6) is used as a colouring agent. For this use, surface activity is not an important property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.

Flash point:

The flash point determination of 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No. 85-83- 6) was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus.The test item started giving brown coloured fumes with burning smell at 289 °C. Thus, the flash point of test item was inferred to be greater than 289 °C at 976.3hPa.

As per the available data for flash point from laboratory, the flash point value determined was 289 degree C. As the data from laboratory has K1 reliability thus considered as key study for the chemical safety assessment. Also based on criteria mentioned in CLP regulation the chemical has flash point >than 60 degree C hence the substance 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No. 85-83 -6) was considered to be non-flammable.

Flammability:

The 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No. 85-83 -6)

has NFPA Flammability rating reported to be 0. This suggests low likelihood of the chemical being flammable. Hence this end point was considered for waiver & the chemical is classified as "Non Flammable" for chemical safety assessment.

Autoflammability

Scarlet red did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C and atmospheric pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that scarlet red is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

Scarlet red does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Scarlet red is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Scarlet red was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is an organic substance containing chemical groups associated with explosive properties,but the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 degree C.

Oxidising properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidising properties and hence,the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

pH

The pH determination of test item 1-(2-methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No 85-83- 6) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v dispersion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 9.94at 26 °C.

As per the available data for pH from laboratory report , the pH value determined to 9.94 at 26 °C. As the data from lab has K1 reliability and the test was performed using OECD guidelines thus considered as key study for the chemical safety assessment.

Based on the study the 1-(2 -methyl-4-(2-methylphenylazo)phenylazo)-2-naphthol (CAS No 85-83- 6) was considered to be basic in nature.

Viscosity:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance in solid.

Other supporting studies from reliable sources such as authoritative database and handbooks also suggests that the chemical Scarlet Red B was dark red brown colored powder in appearance having no odour.

Other supporting studies from various reliable sources such as authoritative database and handbooks ,also suggests that the melting point of chemical Scarlet Red was reported to be in the range of 184 degree C to 189 degree C,and the selected key study value lies in the range as mentioned above.

As the data from lab has K1 reliability and the test was performed using OECD guidelines which has the value of melting point as 183.5 degree C,thus considered as key study for the chemical safety assessment.
