Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

m-Toluidine has been tested in a limited number of aquatic species. Short-term studies representing three trophic levels and two long-term studies representing two trophic levels (Daphnia and algae) are available.

Not in any case information was given whether test concentrations were checked analytically. As the substance is known to be stable in aqueous media, and it is not volatile or highly adsorbing on glass, constant exposure concentrations were assumed.

Fish:

The short-term toxicity of m-toluidine towards fish ( Poecillia reticulata) was determined in a 14d assay yielding an LC50 of 36.31 mg/L.

To assess the long-term toxicity of m-toluidine to fish the stuctural analogue p-toluidine was chosen since no data for m-toluidine were available.

According to the OECD Guideline 210 (Fish, Early-Life Stage Toxicity Test), a LOEC of 1.2 mg/L and a NOEC of 0.6 mg/L for the structural analogue were obtained on fish (Oryzias latipes). The exposure duration was not reported.

Daphnia:

The short-term toxicity of m-toluidine towards invertebrates was tested using Daphnia magna yielding a LC50(48h) of 0.75 mg/L. The method used was the NEN 6501 from the Dutch Standard Organization (1980).

The long-term toxicity of m-toluidine towards invertebrates was investigated in a 16d assay according to NEN 6502 publication (Dutch Standard Organization, 1980). A NOEC of 0.012 mg/L was observed having the growth of Daphnia magna as endpoint.

Alga:

According to the OECD Guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test) a 72h-EC10 of 24.8 mg/L and a 72h-EC50 of 53.11 mg/L was received on Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata). The given values refer to nominal concentrations.

Microorganisms:

The toxicity of m-toluidine towards microorganisms was investigated observing the respiration of activated sludge. On that basis, an EC10(3h) of 580 mg/L and an EC50(3h) of 1572 mg/L were determined.

Additionally the toxicity of m-toluidine toward microorganisms was determined testing Tetrahymena pyriformis. An IGC50 (inhibitory growth concentration) of 204 mg/L (nominal) was determined after a test duration of 40h.

Furthermore the toxicity was determined testing Pseudomonas putida, and an EC10 of 151 mg/L (nominal) was observed after a test duration of 18h.
