The acute toxicity of 4 -chlorotoluene towards fish was determined in a 14d assay. The EC50 accounts for 5.92 mg/L (Koenemann, 1979).

Testing 4-chlorotoluene in an Early-Life Stage Toxicity Test with a method similar to the OECD guideline 210, a NOEC (28d) of 1.9 mg/l was observed (Van Leeuwen 1990).

The acute toxicity of 4-chlorotoluene towards daphnids is characterized by an EC50(48h) of 1.7 mg/L (Rose 1997).

The long-term toxicity of 4-chlorotoluene towards daphnids is characterized by a NOEC(21 d) of 0.32 mg/L as well as an EC50(21 d) of 1.6 mg/L referring to the reproduction of the test animals (Nite 1999).

For the algae Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata) a 72 h NOEC of 2.2 mg/l as well as EC50 of 6.1 mg/L was determined. The determination was performed following the OECD Guideline 201. (Nite 1999)

The toxicity of 4 -chlorotoluene towards microorgansims was tested by the means of Pseudomonas putida growth inhibition yielding an EC10(18 h) of > 25 mg/L (Trenel 1982).

The toxicity of 4 -chlorotoluene towards microorganisms was investigated by the means of the lethal response of Spirostomum ambiguum yielding a LC50(48 h) of 110.8 mg/L (Nalecz-Jawecki, 2002).
