Description of key information

No biodegradation studies were conducted with1,2-dichloro-1-[difluoro(trifluoromethoxy)methoxy]-1,2,2-trifluoroethane. However, basing on the molecular structure no significant biodegradation is expected in the environment because of the fluorinated structure.

Fluorochemical products can resist degradation by acids, bases, oxidising and reducing agents, photolytic processes, microbes, and metabolic processes (Schultz et al. 2003), as the carbon–fluorine bond is the strongest existing covalent bond (450 kJ/mol) in organic chemistry (O’Hagan, 2008). Moreover, the presence of three pairs of nonbonding electrons around each fluorine atom and the effective shielding of carbon by the fluorine atoms prevents any significant attack (Kissa 2001).
