Description of key information

Appearance:

On the basis of physical observation the appearance of chemical N-Methylformanilide was observed to be dark brown liquid.

 

Freezing point:

The Freezing point of N-Methylformanilide; CAS No. 93-61-8 was determined with Freezing Temperature Method and it was determined to be less than -14.86 °C at 977.6 hPa

 

Boiling point:

The boiling point determination of N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. The test was conducted in replicates and mean boiling point was determined to be 140.6°C at 977.0 hPa.

 

Density:

The mean density of N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) is was found to be 1.076 g/cm³ at 20°C and 977.1 hPa.

 

Particle Size Distribution:

In accordance with REACH Chapter R.7A Endpoint Specific Guidance, specifically R.7.1.14.1 Information requirements on granulometry, the granulometry study does not need to be conducted as the test substance,N-methyl formanilide  is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form. The test substance, N-methyl formanilide is liquid at room temperature and as such this study is not technically feasible. Hence this endpoint was considered for waiver.

 

Vapor Pressure:

The vapour pressure of N-methylformanilide was determined to be 2.66 Pa at 25 deg C.

 

Partition Coefficient:

The partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of test substance N-methyl-N-phenylformamide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was determined as per the HPLC method (OECD Guideline-117). The Log Pow value was determined to be 1.141± 0.007 at 25°C. Data from various authoritative databases and handbooks suggests that the LogPow of N-methyl-N-phenylformamide as 1.09. These values indicates that it is hydrophilic in nature, which is also supported by its solubility in water.

 

Water Solubility:

The water solubility for the test item N-Methylformanilide was determined to be 4326 mg/L at 25°C.

 

Surface tension:

Based on the prediction done by ACD labs, the surface tension for chemical N-Methylformanilide was predicted to be  42.3 ± 3.0 dyne/cm.

 

Flash point:

The mean flash point of N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) is 127.33°C at 978.0 hPa.

 

Auto flammability:

N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) is not auto-flammable.

 

Flammability:

N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

 

Explosiveness:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study does not need to be conducted since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of N-methylformanilide. Thus, the chemical is likely to be "Non explosive". Hence this end point was considered for waiver.

 

Oxidising Properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidizing properties and hence the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products:

The study does not need to be conducted because the stability of given substance N-Methylformanilide (CAS No 93-61-8) is not considered to be critical. hence this end poiint is considered to be waiver.

 

pH:

The pH of 1% w/v emulsion of the test item N-Methylformanilide (CAS No 93-61-8) was 4.00 at 28 °C.

Dissociation constant:

The dissociation constant i.e pKa of  N-Methylformanilide (CAS No 93-61-8) is estimated to be 0.53 ± 0.50 at 25 °C.

Viscocity:

Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of N-Methylformanilide( CAS No. 93-61-8) at 20°C and 40°C is 26.84mm²/sec and 21.57 mm²/s, respectively.

Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) at 20°C and 40°C is 28.88mPa.S and 23.20 mPa.S, respectively.

Appearance:

On the basis of physical observation the appearance of chemical N-Methylformanilide was observed to be dark brown liquid.

 

Freezing point:

The Freezing point determination of N-Methylformanilide (CAS No.93-61-8) was done using crushed ice and salt. The time versus temperature curve was drawn with the help of measurement interface MicroLab FS-524. No freezing was observed up to less than -14.86 °C.Hence, the freezing point was concluded to be less than -14.86 °C at 977.6 hPa.

 

Boiling point:

In a test conducted, the boiling point determination of N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. The test was conducted in replicates and mean boiling point was determined to be 140.6°C at 977.0 hPa.

 

Density:

The density of Test item N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8 ) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the Indian standard method for determination of density of liquids [IS 4730:1994 (Reaffirmed 2010)]. The mean density of the test item was found to be 1.076 g/cm³ at 20°C and 977.1 hPa.

Other supporting data from reliable sources such as authoritative database and handbook, also supported the selected key study and exhibited the density of substance N-methylformanilide as 1.095 g/cm3 at 20°C, closer to the selected key study.

Partition Coefficient:

The partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of N-methyl-N-phenylformamide(CAS No.93-61-8) was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals.The reference substances were chosen according to functional similarity with the test substance and calibration graph was prepared . The reference substances were Butanone, Acetophenone, Benzophenone, Phenol, Benzene, 2,6-Diphenylpyridine, 4-Acetylpyridine, 2-Nitrophenol, Nitrobenzene, Naphthalene having Pow value ranging from 0.3 to 4.9 The Log Pow value was determined to be 1.141± 0.007 at 25°C.

Data from various authoritative databases and handbooks suggests that the LogPow of N-methyl-N-phenylformamide as 1.09. These values indicate that it is hydrophilic in nature, which is also supported by its solubility in water.

 

Water Solubility:

The water solubility determination of test item N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was done as per the OECD guideline 105 by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of (N-Methylformanilide of 93-61-8) in water was determined to be 4326 mg/L at 25°C.

Thus based on obtained value the given chemical N-Methylformanilide is considered to be soluble in water.

 

Surface tension:

Based on the prediction done by ACD labs Software (v12.1.0.50375), the surface tension for chemical N-Methylformanilide was predicted to be 42.3 ± 3.0 dyne/cm.

 

Flash point:

The flash point determination of N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was determined to be 127.33°C at 978.0 hPa.

Based on criteria mentioned in CLP regulation the substance N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was considered to be non flammable.

Other supporting data from handbook and authorative databases, also supported the selected key study and exhibited the Flash point of the substance N-methylformanilide as 126°C. Thus, as per reported value the N-methylformanilide was considered to be non-flammable as per the CLP regulations.

The pH determination of test item N-Methylformanilide (CAS No 93-61-8) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v emulsion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 4.00 at 28 °C.

Other supporting data from authoritative database Gestis also supported the selected key study and reported the pH of saturated solution of test substance N-methylformanilide as be 3.5 - 5.5 at 20 deg.C.

Thus results suggest that the test chemical N-Methylformanilide is acidic in nature.

Dissociation constant:

Based on available data from authoritative database Scifinder, the dissociation constant i.e pKa of  N-Methylformanilide (CAS No 93-61-8) is estimated to be 0.53 ± 0.50 at 25 °C.

Viscocity:

The viscosity determination of Test item N-Methylformanilide (CAS No. 93-61-8) was done as per the test guideline OECD 114 using Redwood Viscometer No. 1. Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of Test item at 20°C and 40°C is 26.84 mm²/sec and 21.57 mm²/s, respectively. Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of Test item at 20°C and 40°C is 28.88 mPa.S and 23.20 mPa.S, respectively.
