Executive summary:

FAT 20042/D was investigated for Chemical Oxygen Demand in a study carried out according to DEV DIN 38'409 - H 41 -1 (1980) corresponding to 92/96/EEC C.6. The test substance was tested with a sample weight of 5.80 + 5.74 mg. The test substance FAT 20042/D in water is oxidized by potassium dichromate in a strong sulphuric acid medium with silver sulphate as a catalyst under reflux for 2 hours. The residual dichromate is determined by titration with standardized ferrous ammonium sulphate. The reference substance Potassium hydrogen phthalate solution was tested in a concentration of 20 ml/I. Based on the findings, the COD of FAT 20042/Dwas 862 mg O2/g, whereas the COD of the reference substance was 199 mg O2/I.

The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) of FAT 20042/D is determined by measuring the dissolved oxygen concentration before and after 5 days incubation at 20°C. Based on the findings of the study, the BOD5 of FAT 20042/D :was determined to be 0 mg O2/g.

Taking the value of the corresponding COD test into account, the calculated BOD5/COD- ratio is less than 0.5 which indicates that the substance is not subject to biodegradation.

The biodegradation potential of Acid Red 195 was investigated in studies that determined its Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).

The biochemical oxygen demand of FAT 20041/D is determined by measuring the dissolved oxygen concentration before and after 5 days incubation at 20 °C. Based on the results, the BOD of FAT 20042/D : 0 mg 02/g.

Based on these results the corresponding BOD5/COD quotient for FAT 20042/D is equivalent to zero, so no biodegradation is expected.

 

Other supporting studies for FAT 20042/B (1979) and FAT 20042/A (1979) were also performed with following results -

COD - 508.17 mg O2/g, 1038 mg O2/g

BOD - 0 mg O2/g, 24 mg O2/g.

In all the cases, the BOD5/COD ratio for Acid Red 195 was <0.5, hence the substance is considered to be not readily biodegradable.
