Description of key information
When a freshwater species, the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), was exposed to Bisphenol A (a.k.a. 4,4’-isopropylidenediphenol), the 96-hour LC50 value was 4.6 mg/L. When a saltwater species, the Atlantic silverside (Menidia menidia), was exposed to Bisphenol A (a.k.a. 4,4’-isopropylidenediphenol), the 96-hour LC50 value was 9.4 mg/L. These results were selected as key studies, since they were from valid toxicity tests that reported the lowest LC50 values for these parameters.

Additional information
One 96-hour acute freshwater fish study with zebrafish (Danio rerio) was available with 2-acetone, polymer with phenol, a mixture of some of the major and minor components of the reaction mass of phenol and 4,4’-isopropylidenediphenol (referred to henceforth as “the reaction mass”). This study was deemed reliable for use in risk assessments (Klimish score = 1). The 96-hour LC50 value for 2-acetone, polymer with phenol was 4.95 mg/L with 95% confidence intervals of 4.07 – 6.00 mg/L. Additionally, fish acute toxicity tests with the two major components of the reaction mass, phenol and 4,4’-isopropylidenediphenol (a.k.a Bisphenol A), were available. These studies were also deemed valid (Klimish score = 1-2). The 96-hour LC50 for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exposed to phenol is 8.9 mg/L. The 96-hour LC50 values for sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), and Atlantic silverside (Menidia menidia) exposed to Bisphenol A are 11 mg/L, 4.6 mg/L, and 9.4 mg/L, respectively.
The 96-hour LC50 of 4.6 mg/L Bisphenol A with the fathead minnow was the lowest, and thus most conservative, fish acute toxicity value reported for either the major components or a mixture of some of the major and minor components of the reaction mass.
