Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The toxicity to aquatic algae was tested in a GLP and guideline read-across study with didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5). The EC50 (growth rate) was determined to be 0.021 mg/L and NOEC (growth rate) was determined to be 0.011 mg/L (both values are mean measured values).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.021 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.011 mg/L

Additional information

A read across approach was applied for short-term toxicity to algae using data of didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5) as this substance was considered to show similar ecotoxicological properties as compared to the test substance.

The GLP and guideline study was carried out with the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum exposed to the read across substance didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5) and radiolabelled in a 96h test. One control and six treatment groups were set, ranging from 3.3 to 130 μg/L (initial measured concentrations) spaced by a factor around 2. NOEC and EC10, 50 were calculated for growth (cell density) and biomass. The NOEC was 0.011 mg/L for the biomass parameter and the growth rate. The EC50 was 0.026 mg/L (growth rate and biomass). The EC10 value was 0.014 mg/L (growth rate) and 0.013 mg/L (biomass). The 96h test was followed by a 6 d recovery phase, which demonstrated the algistatic properties of the read across substance.
