Description of key information

The long term aquatic toxicity to Daphnia magna of the read across substance didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5) was determined in this OECD guideline 211 and GLP study. The measured NOEC value was determined to be 0.01 mg/L.

A read across approach was applied for short-term toxicity to algae using data of didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5) as this substance was considered to show similar ecotoxicological properties as compared to the test substance.

A 21 day daphnia magna reproduction test was conducted according to OECD guideline 211 with the read across substance didecyldimethylammonium chloride (CAS 7173 -51 -5). The test was carried under GLP conditions using the read across substance in 51.4 % aqueous solution and as radiolabelled 14C read-across substance under intermittent flow-through conditions. Four replicates of each concentration (0, 0.0035, 0.0062, 0.0097, 0.0189, 0.0329, 0.0592 mg/L (measured concentrations) and control media were tested with 10 test animals (<24-hours old). Living, dead parent animals and young were counted; dead and young were removed three times per week.  Reproduction, survival and animal condition (swimming behaviour, size, other observable criteria) of test animals were monitored relative to control animals. All daphnids in the 56 µg/L treatment were dead by day 2; 50% of daphnids were dead in the 32 µg/L treatment by day 9. The measured NOEC value was determined to be 0.01 mg/L.
