Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

As no acute study is available for assessing the toxicity of the substance on aquatic invertebrates, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the structurally related Alkyl Dimethyl betaine (EC-No. 931-700-2) and pure homologues (alkyl betaine C10, C12, C14) was applied. The read across is justified due to the structural similarity of the analogue substances and similar physico-chemical properties resulting in a similar environmental fate and ecotoxicity profile. Further justification is given in the analogue justification attached to section 13 in IUCLID.

The two studies were conducted according to OECD 202. Garcia (2008) revealed EC50 (72 h) values between 5.3 (C12-Betaine, pure) and 48 mg/L (C10-Betaine, pure), depending on the chain lengh. In the test conducted with 100% substance of EC-No. 931-700-2 an EC50 value of 7.76 mg/L was found (Vandendaele, 2010).
