Description of key information

FAT 40851 exhibited low toxicity to the aquatic organisms.

Additional information

A number of acute aquatic toxicity tests with the substance FAT 40851/A  in different freshwater species from three trophic levels are available. The acute toxicity test was low in freshwater fish (Danio rerio, 96-hours semi-static, LC50 >110 mg/L) and in freshwater invertebrates (Daphnia magna, 48-hours static, EC50 100 mg/L). In contrast, acute toxicity of the substance in freshwater green algae was seen and the lowest EC50 value was found for biomass yield (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, 72-hours static). While the EC50 values were >100 mg/L both for biomass yield and growth rate, the EC10 for biomass yield was 5 mg/L. Studies on the long-term toxicity of the substance to aquatic freshwater organisms or toxicity to marine organisms are lacking. No inhibitory toxicity of FAT 40851/A to activated, predominantly domestic sewage sludge was found. The EC50 value in a 3-hour activated sludge respiration inhibition test was >1000 mg/L and the NOEC was equal to or greater than 1000 mg/L.
