The Shake flask method was used to measure the disappearance of 2-methylpyridine from samples of creosote-adapted inoculum. After 14 days no amount of 2-methylpyridine was detected resulting in 100% degradation. It was also found that by following the method described by Bunch and Chambers (1967) that 2-methylpyridine was biodegraded. Under sulfate-reducing conditions, < 8% of 2-methylpyridine remained after 8 months; however, under methanogenic conditions 97% of 2-methylpyridine remained after 8 months. In another study degradation was not reported, as 2-methylpyridine was persistent in an anoxic sediment (the sediment (<1mm, sieved) and overlying water (pH 7.48, salinity 13%, sulfate concentration 13.5mM) water was collected from the estuary of the Tansui River (Guandu, Taipei).
