Description of key information

The surface tension of a test concentration of 1 g/L isobutyl-(S)-lactate in water is measured to be 62.5 mN/m at 20 °C. Therefore, the substance is regarded as not surface active.

Additional information

The surface tension of isobutyl-(S)-lactate was determined in a GLP compliant study using the OECD harmonized ring methods according to OECD guideline 115 and EU method A.5 (Regulation EC 440/2008). Using a 1 g/L test concentration in water, the results deliver a corrected surface tension for the test substance of 62.5 mN/m at 20 °C. Since the value is > 60 mN/m, isobutyl-(S)-lactate is not regarded to be surface active.

According to Clary, Feron and van Velthuijsen (1998) the surface tension of isobutyl-(S)-lactate is 26.1 dyne/cm. The stated surface tension of the substance is different from the value given in Baltussen et al. (2010). However, no information on test substance concentration and other experimental parameters is available from the Clary et al. (1998) study. Therefore, this study is included as supportive study only.

Results can be extrapolated to the target substance isobutyl-(R)-lactate without restrictions, since being the optical antipode.
