Description of key information

Additional information

Appearance

The test item was observed to be a clear, colourless, slightly viscous liquid during performance of GLP guideline studies.

Melting/freezing point

Freezing temperature was determined to be less than 253 ± 0.5 K (OECD 102).

Boiling point

As the test material decomposed, no value for boiling temperature could be determined. From vapour pressure data, the boiling temperature was estimated to be 546 K at 101.325 kPa (OECD 103; EU Method A.4)

Relative density

Density was determined to be 859 kg/m3 at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C (OECD 109, pycnometer method)

Granulometry

The test item is a liquid and determination of particle size distribution is not relevant.

Vapour pressure

The vapour pressure of the test material was determined to be 5.2 x 10E-04 Pa at 25 °C (EU Method A.4).

Partition coefficient

Since the hydrolytic half-life of the test material has been demonstrated to be less than 10 minutes at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C, the partition coefficient of the test material was estimated as 8.19 using specialised fragment constant methodology software (KOWWIN, version 1.66, Syracuse Research Corporation, William Meylan, 1993 to 2000). The software database of experimental literature values also allowed assessment of the solubility of the proposed hydrolysis products; 2-ethylhexanol (2.73) and boric acid (-0.22).

Water solubility

Since the hydrolytic half-life of the test material has been demonstrated to be less than 10 minutes at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C, solubility of the test material was estimated as < 3.15 x 10E-05 g/L using specialised fragment constant methodology software (WSKOW, version 1.40, Syracuse Research Corporation, William Meylan, 1994 to 2000). The software database of experimental literature values also allowed assessment of the solubility of the proposed hydrolysis products; 2-ethylhexanol (0.880 g/L) and boric acid (50 g/L).

Solubility in organic solvents

The test item was found to be miscible in all proportions with standard fat at 37.0 ± 0.5 °C (OECD 116).

Surface tension

Determination of surface tension is not required because water solubility of the test item has been estimated be less than 3.15 x 10E-05 g/L at 20.0 °C.

Flash point

The flash point of the test material was determined to be 119 ± 2 °C (EU Method A.9).

Autoflammability / self-ignition temperature

The test material was determined to have an auto-ignition temperature of 286 ± 5°C (EU Method A.15).

Flammability

According to ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance (Version 3.0; August 2014), the primary value for ease of ignition in liquids is the flash point. The flash point of the test item was determined to be 119 ± 2 °C and this value was used for purposes of CLP classification (non-flammable).

Explosive properties

In accordance with column 2 section 7.11 of REACH Annex VII, testing for explosive properties was not conducted. Based on a consideration of the known chemical composition of the substance, there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the substance.

Oxidising properties

In accordance with column 2 section 7.13 of REACH Annex VII, testing for oxidising properties was not conducted. Based on a consideration of the known chemical composition of the substance, there are no functional groups or other structural alerts present to indicate this substance would promote oxidation.
