Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1995-02-20 to 1995-07-15
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. However, the 90% saturation level was not achieved. Substance identification is specified with purity, but isomers composition is missing. Therefore restrictions apply to the result itself, but the study is considered sufficiently reliable for qualitative assessment.

Qualifier:

Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Qualifier:

Guideline:
other: ISO 304
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
UK GLP compliance programme (inspected on 31 January 1994 / signed on 16 March 1994)
Type of method:
ring method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Storage conditions: metal bottle at room temperature.
Surface tension:
62.4 mN/m
Temp.:
18.5 °C
Conc.:
3.91 mg/L

The peak areas relating to the standards and sample solutions are shown below:

 Solution  Mean peak area
 Standard 99.4 mg/L 5.676 x 104
 Standard 105 mg/L 6.147 x 104
 Sample A 5.554 x 104
 Sample B 5.727 x 104

Mean sample solution concentration = 3.91 mg/L

Calibration

72.9  18.5  1.001
73.0  18.5  1.000
73.1  18.5  0.998
72.9  18.5  1.001
73.3  18.5  0.996

Mean calibration factor = 0.999

Sample solution

Time (mins)  Reading (mN/m)  Temperature (°C)
133 62.4  18.5
145 62.4  18.5
160 62.5  18.5
193 62.5  18.5
209 62.5  18.5
239 62.3  18.5

Mean reading = 62.4 mN/m

Surface tension = reading x calibration factor = 62.4 x 0.999 = 62.4 mN/m

Conclusions:
According to EU A5 criteria, as the result is above the threshold value of 60 mN/m, the substance is NOT considered to have surface-active potential under the experimental conditions.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of the test substance was measured under GLP according to ISO 304 (listed in EU A5 guideline), ring method.

Six measurements were performed on a single solution at 3.9 mg/L, corresponding to about 83% of the saturation solubility, and 18.5°C. No time dependency was observed, and the mean value was corrected with calibration factor from water.

The surface tension of the test substance is 62.4 mN/m, at 3.9 mg/L and 18.5°C.

Description of key information

62.4 mN/m at 3.9 mg/L (ca 83% saturation). Not surface-active under testing conditions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

An experimental study is available, however testing conditions do not comply with the requirements of the guideline. The result is nevertheless considered as sufficiently reliable for qualitative information (as close to the required concentration), but cannot be retained as key value for purpose of CSA.
