Endpoint:
flammable liquids: obsolete as covered by section 'Flash point'
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid
Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
23 Jun - 11 Aug 2014
Reliability:

Test procedure:
step 1
step 2
step 3
step 4
Identity of evolved gas:
not applicable as no gas evolved
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed

Results:

Step

Observations

1

No signs of evolution of gas. The test item initially floated on the surface of the water then sank to the bottom.

2

No signs of gas evolution or ignition.

3

No signs of gas evolution or ignition.

4 (test 1)

No gas evolved.

4 (test 2)

No gas evolved.

4 (test 3)

No gas evolved.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The flammability of the substance in water was assessed using a relevant test method and in compliance with GLP. The result is considered to be reliable.

Description of key information

Flammability: non flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The flammability study is not required for liquids as flammability is assessed on the basis of flash point.

The flammability of the substance in contact with water was assessed in accordance with EU Test Method A.12 and in compliance with GLP. Under the conditions of the study, the submission substance was determined to be non-hazardous as no gases were evolved in any of the four steps of the study.

There is no indication on the basis of chemical structure and experience in handling and use that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air).

Therefore, in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, there is no need to conduct further flammability testing.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is not classified for flammability according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. This is on the basis of a measured flash point of 108°C and a measured boiling point of 227°C. Similarly, the submission substance is not classified for substances or mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gas on the basis of available result using EU Test Method A.12. In addition, experience in handling and use and the fact that the substance is very soluble in water indicate that the submission substance should not be classified for this hazard.
