Description of key information

Waiving of study:
All species constitute simple basic, inorganic structures, which are not biodegradable. In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, a simulation test on biodegradability in soil (required in section 9.2.1.3) does not need to be conducted as the test substance is of inorganic nature.
Due to its oxidising properties, chlorine reacts with organic material in soil and disappears very rapidly. The kinetic model of Vandepitte and Schowanek indicates that hypochlorite (form of chlorine in water) is eliminated within the first minutes of the test.

The high water solubility of chlorine can lead to a high mobility in soil, although chlorine as vapour or as aqueous solution is normally irreversibly bound to soil organics within the first few millimetres or centimetres of the soil surface.
