Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Fatty acids, C16-18, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 85116-93-4) is not harmful to microorganisms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Two studies, investigating the short-term toxicity to Pseudomonas putida once of 2,2-bis[[(1-oxoisooctadecyl)oxy]methyl]-1,3-propanediyl bis(isooctadecanoate) (CAS-No. 62125-22-8) and once of Pentaerythritol tetraoleate (CAS-No. 19321-40-5), were used as read across for Fatty acids, C16-18, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 85116-93-4). These substances are structurally and composition related to Fatty acids, C16-18, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 85116-93-4). Both static GLP-cell multiplication inhibition tests (both: Mead, 1997) according or equivalent to ISO 10712 showed no effect on the growth of P. putida at the tested concentration after 16 hours (EL10/ EL50 > 10000 mg/L, NOELR ≥ 10000 mg/L). A conclusion by analogue approach has been applied. Based on the analogy it can be concluded that no toxicological effects on microorganisms are expected for Fatty acids, C16-18, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 85116-93-4). Furthermore, the biodegradation tests exhibit the readily biodegradability of the target substance. Therefore, the sensitive single species as well as the activated sludge test shows, inhibition and a disturbance in the biodegradation process of a sewage treatment plant is not anticipated.
