Description of key information

Flammability range:
2.5 to 13.5% (74% ethanol solution)
3.3 to 19%
3.3-3.5% to 15-19%
LEL=3.7%

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

A limited but sufficient number of published values are available for the upper and lower flammability of pure ethanol. These values cover a reasonably narrow range of values and at least two are clearly different which suggest that they originate from different sources. At least one is judged to be from a reliable source. A highly reliable measured value is available for a preparation containing 75% ethanol. The value used for the key value is from the reliable published study.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The flashpoint is in the range where classification for flammability is required. Under the EU CLP regulation, a classification in category 2 for flammable liquids is required.
