Description of key information
With high probability acutely not harmful to fish. No acute toxic effects occurred within the range of water solubility.

The acute toxicity of the test substance to zebra fish was determined in a 96-hour static test according to OECD TG 203 and under GLP (RCC Ltd. 2002). A limit test was performed in accordance with the guideline to demonstrate the test substance has no toxic effect on the test organisms at the nominal concentration of 100 mg/L. The analytically determined test substance concentration (originating from dissolved and undissolved test substance) in the test medium was 48 mg/L at the start of the test. After 48 and 96 hours, 35 and 23 mg/L were measured. The mean measured test substance concentration was 35 mg/L, which was clearly above the water solubility of the test substance. In the control and at the test concentration of nominal 100 mg/L no mortality or other signs of intoxication were determined during the test period of 96 hours.
Therefore, the 96-hour NOEC and the 96-hour LC0 of the test substance to zebra fish were determined to be at least 100 mg/L nominal. The 96-hour LOEC, the 96-hour LC50 and the 96-hour LC100 were clearly higher than 100 mg/L nominal.
These findings are supported by a second limit test (non-GLP) according to OECD 203 with zebra fish (Ciba-Geigy Ltd. 1986). Due to the low water solubility of the test substance an emulsifier (Alkylphenol-polyglycolether) has been used. Based on the characteristics of the test substance (UVCB) the concentration was not confirmed analytically. However, no acute toxic effects occurred within the range of water solubility within 96 hours. Therefore, the LC50, the LC0 and the LC100 after 96 h were determined to be above 100 mg/L (nominal).
A third GLP-study according to OECD 203 with carp and analytical monitoring was conducted (RCC Notox B.V. 1989). As well, due to the low water solubility of the test substance an emulsifier (Tween 80) has been used. Although an analytical monitoring has been carried out, the effect concentration should be related to the nominal concentration since the test substance is an UVCB. However, the LC50 was determined to be 112 mg/L nominal and 2.2 mg/L actual (what exceeds the water solubility by far).
