Description of key information

There is inadequate evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of carbon black.

There is sufficient evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of carbon black.

There is sufficient evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of carbon black extracts.

Overall evaluation : Carbon black is possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).

There is evidence of non cancerogenic respiratory effects.

Carbon black was shown to deposit in lung tissues of occupationnally exposed workers

Carbon black may irrate skin, may cause mechanical eye irritation, may cause respiratory irritation.

Overall conclusion: Appropriate engineering control and work practice are able and must be implemented to reduce workers exposure to the lowest level
