Principles of method if other than guideline:
The density is determined by measuring the volume of a known mass of the test substance by means of a gas displacement pycnometer. In gas pycnometric density measurements, the volume determined excludes the volume occupied by open pores; however, it includes the volume occupied by sealed pores or pores inaccessible to the gas if present.
The volume occupied by the test substance is determined from the exactly known volumes of the empty test chamber and expansion chamber, determined by calibration, and the pressure change of an inert gas (usually helium) in the test chamber, that results when the connection to the expansion chamber is opened. For the calculation of density the mass of the test substance is measured with an analytical balance.
The method is described in DIN 66137-2 and Ph.Eur. 2.9.23.
