Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The potential of bioaccumulation of tetrahydromethylphthalic anhydride (MTHPA) is low.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

BCF (aquatic species):
20.9 L/kg ww

Additional information

1. The calculated log Pow of 2.38-2.51 does not indicate that tetrahydromethylphthalic anhydride (MTHPA) might bioaccumulate. Therefore, no bioaccumulation study is conducted.

2. This assumption is supported by the BCF of MTHPA estimated by a QSAR calculation. According to QSAR (BCFBVA ver.3.0), the BCF of the test substance (MTHPA) is in the range of 17.16 -20.9 L/kg.

As MTHPA is rapidly hydrolysed to the corresponding dicarboxylic acids, a QSAR calculation of the BCF of the hydrolysis product of MTHPA was conducted in addition. The potential of bioaccumulation of the two isomers of tetrahydromethylphthalic acid is low, as calculated by QSAR given by a BCF of less than 3.2.

Therefore it is concluded that the potential of bioaccumulation of MTHPA is low.
