Description of key information

Experimental data on three representatives of the category (C16, C20 and C32/36) show no acute toxicity to fish up to the limit of water solubility. These results were cross-read to 2-decyltetradecanol.

2-Decyltetradecanol is a member of the Guerbet Alcohols, which comprises a range of branched long chain alcohols C12-32. It is also structurally related to the substances of the OECD SIDS Long Chain Alcohols (LCA) categories, comprising a range of straight and branched long chain alcohols C6-22. As defined in the ‘Read Across Justification Document’ section 13, data provided for these categories is representative of 2-decyltetradecanol and suitable for assessment purposes. Experimental data for the Guerbet and LCA categories has been evaluated and trends in the environmental fate of long chain alcohols was used to extrapolate to the C24 alcohol, 2-decyltetradecanol for ecotoxicological endpoints.

No data on short-term toxicity of 2-decyltetradecanol to invertebrates were available. However, there are data on acute toxicity to daphnia for three representatives of the Guerbet alcohol category; specifically 2-hexyldecan-1-ol, 2-butyloctan-1-ol, and a mixture of 2-octyldodecan-1-ol and 2-hexyltetradecan-1-ol.

The C12 Guerbet alcohol 2-butyloctan-1-ol show acute toxicity to daphnia in contrast to the higher alcohols 2-hexyldecan-1-ol (C16) and mixture of 2 -octyldodecan-1-ol and 2 -hexyl-1-tetradecanol (C20) which show no acute toxicity to daphnia up to the limit of water solubility. These effects can be a consequence of decreasing water solubility with increasing chain length. Thus no aquatic toxicity is considered for the Guerbet alcohols with chain lengths >= C16 with an extremely low water solubility.
