Principles of method if other than guideline:
The study was conducted in three different trials. The objective of the first trial was to compare the effects of high levels of dietary Al and Zn upon induction of pauses in egg production and subsequent performance of Japanese quail laying hens. The objective of the second trail was to determine the effect of dietary Zn and Al in combination with decreased day length for inducing pauses in egg production. The objective of Trial 3 was to determine the influence of graded levels of dietary Al on the performance of Japanese quail laying hens using levels lower then 0.3% Al in order to prevent complete cessation of egg production.

The effect of using a high level of dietary aluminium (0.3% AI, as aluminum sulfate) was investigated among 4 and 7 days. Results showed that Al treatments significantly (P<0.05) reduced body weight. Egg production approached 0% by Day 3. Egg shell breaking strength was significantly (P<0.05) reduced by dietary Al. Aluminum significantly reduced plasma inorganic P, measured on day 5. In Trial 3 (28 day study), diets containing graded levels (0, 0.05, 0.10, or 0.15%) of Al were fed to Japanese quail hens for 28 days. Both 0.10% and 0.15% Al significantly (P<0.05) reduced egg shell breaking strength during Days 8 through 12 and body weight at Day 28. Feeding 0.15% Al significantly reduced feed intake and egg production.
