Biodegradation screening tests indicate poor biodegradability of diethylenetriamine, due to toxicity/inhibition of the inoculum by the high concentrations employed. A single test, using low ratio of test substance to inoculum concentration, showed "ready biodegradabilty" after an approximately 12 day lag phase. Simulation tests in activated sludge, sewage, soil, and lake waters indicate that the substance is rapidly and ultimately biodegraded in a wide range of environments, even without having prior exposure/adaptation to the substance. The substance has been shown to be completely removed in activated sludge wastewater treatment process, following an adaptation period. Half-lives for primary biodegradation in surface waters are on the order of 20 -28 days. The half-life for complete mineralization in surface soils is conservatively estimated to be approximately 30 days. These results in simulation tests are consistent with a "readily biodegradable" substance.
