Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Hydrolysis

Phthalic anhydride hydrolysed by 50 % within 30.5 seconds in the presence of water at pH 7 and 25 C, forming phthalic acid.

Photodegradation in air

In the atmosphere a half-life of 21.4 days for phthalic anhydride and 13 days for the hydrolysis product phthalic acid is estimated due to indirect photolysis with hydroxyl radicals, considering an OH-concntration of 500,000 radicals/cm³ as a 24-h average.

Photodegradation in water

In the hydrosphere, phthalic anhydrid is transformed photochemically under anaerobic conditions showing polymerisation to polyphenyl. The half-lifes are in the range from 3.9 h to 9.6 h following first order reactions. For photooxidation in sea water a half-life of 0.93 hours is obtained.
