PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Ethylene oxide is readily biodegradable and hence not persistent (P) and not very persistent (vP). Due to its low log Pow of -0.3 ethylene oxide is not considered to accumulate in organisms and is therefore not assessed as B or vB. However, ethylene oxide has to be considered as toxic in the context of the PBT assessment since it meets the criteria for classification as carcinogenic in Cat. 1B (H350), mutagenic in Cat. 1B (H340) and toxic for reproduction in Cat. 1B (H360Fd).

Regarding all available data on biotic and abiotic degradation, bioaccumulation and toxicity it can be stated that the substance does not fulfill the PBT criteria (not PBT) and not the vPvB criteria (not vPvB).

Likely routes of exposure:

Because the substance does not fulfill the PBT and vPvB criteria, no emission characterisation is performed.
