Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In a short-term respiration test using activated sludge from a sewage treatment plant treating predominantly domestice sewage (BASF AG, 1991) a 30 -min EC10 of > 1000 mg/L was determined. Additionally, in a publication by Klecka et al. in 1984 a three hour exposure of domestic activated sludge resulted in a 3 -h IC50 of > 1000 mg/L. Both studies were performed according to OECD 209. In a Pseudomonas putida growth inhibition test according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38412, part 8 performed by Huels AG in 1996 a 17 -h EC10 and a 17-h EC50 of 90 and 110 mg/L were determined.

As single-species tests have a lower relevance for the assessment of the toxicity to the microbial community of sewage treatment plants, the study by BASF was selected as key study.
