Description of key information

Appearance

The test material is an organic substance. It is an amber-coloured, viscous liquid with an odour characteristic of sulfur compounds.

Melting/freezing point

The melting point of the test substance was not determined because its physical state at 20 C and 1013 hPa is a viscous liquid. The test substance has a pour point of - 6 degrees C ( ASTM D97).

Boiling point

Analysis by TGA indicates the test substance decomposes before boiling. The test material’s weight loss associated with decomposition occurred at temperatures of 209, 250 and 529 C. The onset of decomposition occurred at 198 C (ASTM E2550 -07).

Relative density

The relative density of the test substance is 1.02 at 15.6 degrees C (ASTM D4052 -96).

Granulometry

This study has been omitted in accordance with Column 2 of Annex VII Section 7.14. The substance is not marketed or used in a solid or granular form.

Vapour pressure

The vapour pressure of the test material at 25 degrees C is 0.032 Pa. The test material did not show transitions in physical state during testing (EU Method A.4).

Partition coefficient

The log Pow values of the components eluted from the HPLC column ranged from < 0.30 to > 7.10 (OECD 117).

Water solubility

The water solubility is loading rate dependent: 39.6 mg/L (at loading rate of 100 mg/L) and 137.6 mg/L (at loading rate of 1 g/L) at 20 degrees C (EU Method A.6).

Surface tension

In accordance with REACH Annex VII, section 7.6, column 2, the study was not conducted. Based on the know chemical composition, surface activity is not expected.

Flash point

Flash point values on various batches of this product were measured between Aug 2012 and August 2013.  Reported values range from 61.0 °C to 90.0 °C with a mean of 66.6 °C at 760 mm Hg as determined by the Pensky-Martens Closed cup (PMCC) Tester. A large portion of the results fall in the 61.0-66.0 °C range. Range of 61.0 °C to 78.73 °C (~+3 sigma from mean value) is adopted.

Autoflammability / self-ignition temperature

The auto-ignition temperature of the test substance is 2860C at a pressure of 102.09 kPa (EU Method A.15).

Flammability

Testing for this endpoint is waived based on a consideration of the chemical structure and experience in handling and use. The substance does not exhibit pyrophoric properties nor is it flammable on contact with water. A flash point study has been performed.

Explosive properties

In accordance with Column 2 of section 7.11 of REACH Annex VII, the study need not been conducted if there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the substance. Based on long-term experience with handling and use and the known chemical and physical properties of the substance and its chemical structure, a negative result is predicted for the A14 Explosive Properties test of Council Regulation (EC) no 440/2008. As such it is considered justified to omit the test.

Oxidising properties

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII (7.13), the study need not be conducted if the substance is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials. Based on the long-term experience with handling and use and the known chemical and physical properties of the substance and its chemical structure, a negative result is predicted for the A21 Oxidising Properties (Liquids) test of Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008. As such it is considered justified to omit the test.

Stability in organic solvents

Solutions of the test material in Arachis Oil BP were stable for at least four hours (analysis associated with OECD 422)

Dissociation constant

In accordance with Annex XI the study does not need to be conducted if it is not scientifically possible to perform the test due to the properties of the test substance or analytical limitations of test methods. The test material is an incompletely identified mixture of components containing multiple functional groups that it has not been possible to separate by chromatographic methods. Additionally, the water solubility of this substance has been determined to be loading rate dependent and the composition of the substance in water would vary depending on loading. The test material contains no significant chromophoric groups. UV analyses give broad , unresolved peaks. Because of its complexity, dissociation products cannot be identified or analytically monitored either by spectrophomotetric or titration methods.

Viscosity

The viscosity of the test material was measured at 100 C and 40 C.  At 100 C the viscosity is 46.827 cSt. At 40 C the viscosity is 1692.432 cSt (ASTM D445 -97).
