In a CO2-Headspace test according to ISO 14593 which is identical to OECD 310 (Ready Biodegradability - CO2 in sealed vessels) butyl acrylate was readily biodegradable. The inoculum used in this study was domestic activated sludge from a laboratory wastewater treatment plant fed with municipal sewage. The assay was conducted at a test substance concentration of 31 mg/L equivalent to 20 mg/L TOC at 22 °C in the dark. After 28 days a biodegradation degree of 90 - 100% (TIC/ThIC) was determined. The 10-day-window criterion for ready biodegradability was fulfilled (BAMM 2005).

This result is supported by an other biodegradation assay conducted according to OECD Guideline 301 C, the modified MITI Test (I), in which butyl acrylate was readily biodegradable: 100 mg test substance/L; sludge concentration: 30 mg/L; 61% biodegradation after 14 days expressed as BOD/ThOD (Chemicals Inspection & Testing Institute Japan, 1992).

In a Closed Bottle Test (OECD-Guideline 301D) with secondary effluent of a domestic waste water treatment plant a biodegradation of 57.8 % within 28 days was achieved (BAMM, 1996).

Six other studies were available, but these studies had all a reliability of 4 due to insufficient information on methods and results.

Based on the presented test results, butyl acrylate is considered to be readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
