Description of key information

Depending on local conditions and existing concentrations, disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
44.6 mg/L

Additional information

Three studies investigating the toxicity of maleic anhydride to microorganisms are available. The substance hydrolyses in contact with water forming maleic acid. Therefore studies on maleic anhydride and the product of hydrolysis are considered here. As key study a guideline test performed in compliance with German standard DIN 38412, part 8 was identified. After 18 hours an EC10 of 44.6 mg/l in Pseudomonas putida was determined (Hüls America Inc., 1990).
