Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance is gaseous and the primary environmental compartment to which it partition is air. In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the study must not be conducted if exposure to soil and sediment is unlikely.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Considering its solubility, volatility and resultant Henry’s Law Constant, chloromethane is expected, under equilibrium conditions, to exist principally in the air. Additionally, the substance is not intended to be released to the soil compartment.

The substance is readily biodegradable, has a low potential for adsorption and does not bioaccumulate. These characteristics suggest a small hazardous potential towards soil organisms. Therefore, the equilibrium partitioning method has been used to assess the hazard potential of chloromethane for soil organisms.
