Description of key information

Photodegradation

There is no evidence for photodegradation of ammonium sulfate. However, ammonium sulfate may be formed in atmospheric aerosols (occurrence predominantly in the fraction < 2.5 μm) from reaction between ammonia and sulfuric acid (from SO2 emissions). SO2 concentrations control the ammonium sulfate formation (Scott and Cattell, 1979; Gmur, Evans and Cunningham, 1983).

Hydrolysis

In aqueous solution, ammonium sulfate is completely dissociated into the ammonium ion (NH4+) and the sulfate anion (SO4 2-). Hydrolysis of ammonium sulfate does not occur.
