Description of key information

The lower and upper flammability limits of 1,3-butadiene are 2-12% by volume in air. This would result in a classification of R12 extremely flammable under the DSD and a Category 1 flammable gas under the CLP Regulations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
extremely flammable

Additional information

The CRC Handbook (Lide, 2008) is peer-reviewed and is considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint.

The supporting study, the Merk Index (2006) is also a peer reviewed handbook and supports the value reported in the key study.

Justification for classification or non-classification

On the basis of these upper and lower flammability limits 1,3-butadiene is classified as R12 'extremely flammable' under the DSD and as a Category 1 flammable gas under the CLP Regulations with the hazard statement 'extremely flammable gas' as it is ignitable when in a mixture of 13% of less by volume in air.
