Description of key information

Synthetic amorphous silica (SAS) may enter the environment either by direct emission or may be released from a product matrix. In the latter case, the route into the environment and likelihood of environmental exposure depends on the specific matrix in which SAS was originally used. The distribution will be determined not only by the intrinsic properties of SAS, but also by the environmental conditions.

Due to its physico-chemical properties, SAS is expected to mainly distribute into soil and sediment, where it undergoes natural transformation processes of weathering including dissolution and precipitation. Amorphous silica dissolution has an essential role in controlling biogeochemical cycling of silicon.
